After the MSC Lirica cruise in January, we booked the Venice – Santos Grand Voyage leg on the MSC Armonia from Venice to Civitavecchia in November. Armonia is a new ship for me, although it is a sister ship to the MSC Lirica I visited in March. The departure port was Venice for the first time, in reality Marghera near Venice. We booked flights with KLM this time too.
Tammikuun MSC Lirican risteilyn jälkeen varasimme marraskuulle MSC Armonialle Venetsiasta Civitavecchiaan osuuden Venetsia – Santos Grand Voyagesta. Aluksena Armonia on minulle uusi vaikkakin ttamikuussa käydyn MSC Lirican sisaralus. Lähtösatamana oli Venetsia ensimmäistä kertaa, todellisuudessa Marghera Venetsian lähellä. Lennot varasimme tälläkin kertaa KLM:llä.

The first leg was a flight from Helsinki to Amsterdam on the new Airbus A321neo, the plane has only been in use for three months. A really nice and quiet plane. Everything worked great on KLM and the service and food were excellent. In Amsterdam we changed planes to Venice and this time the plane was a 25-year-old Boeing 737-800. That flight also went well. In Venice we took a bus to the city center, from where it was a good kilometer walk to the port.
Sekin lento meni mukavasti. Venetsiassa siirryimme bussilla keskustaan josta oli reilun kilometrin kävely satamaan.

The weather in Venice was the same as in Helsinki, +5C and it was raining. When we arrived at the terminal, it took a while to find the right entrance, which of course was not at the end of the building but a small door on the side. Check-in itself was quite an experience. First, we got our queue numbers and waited one group at a time to check in. There, the passengers were divided into those traveling to Europe and South America. Then we waited again for security. After which some of the group queued for passport control. After that, we got to queue for transportation to the ship. After waiting long enough, it was time for the half-hour trip to Marghera by water bus. There was a pontoon dock brought to the side of the ship, from which there were quite steep stairs to the ship’s entrance. Now that’s something we’ve experienced.
Check in itsessään oli melkoinen kokemus. Ensin saatiin vuoronumerot ja ryhmä kerrallaan odoteltiin check in:iin. Siellä matkustajat jaettiin Eurooppaan ja Etelä-Ameriikkaan matkustaviin. Sitten taas odoteltiin turvatarkastukseen. Jonka jälkeen osa porukkaa jonotti passin tarkastukseen. Sen jälkeen pääsimme jonottamaan kuljetukseen laivalle. Tarpeeksi odoteltuamme oli vuorossa puolen tunnin matka Margheraan vesibussilla. Siellä oli laivan kylkeen tuotu ponttoonilaituri josta nousi melko jyrkät portaat laivan sisäänkäyntiin. Nyt on sekin koettu.

When we arrived on the ship, the first thing we did was to put our things in the cabin and then, as usual, we had a buffet lunch and got to know the ship. Just before departure, we had an emergency drill. This time, the weather was so cold that we had to wait until the next day to visit the pools. After departure, it was time for dinner. We had dinner at the La Pergola restaurant. The food and service were good there the whole trip.

The next day the weather was already considerably warmer, although it was windy. Next up was Zadar in Croatia. My first visit to Zadar, so the city. So after breakfast we took a shuttle bus to the city center. Zadar was founded in 59 BC, so it is a really old and historic city. I have to come here again and stay longer to explore the city. There is a lively ferry and express boat service from Zadar to the nearby islands and even further afield.
Seuraavan päivänä sää oli jo huomattavasti lämpimämpi , vaikka olikin tuulinen. Vuorossa oli Zadar Croatiassa. Ensimmäinen vierailuni Zadarissa, joten kaupungissa. Joten aamiaisen jälkeen Shuttlebussilla keskustaan. Zadar on perustettu 59 eaa. , joten todella vanha ja historiallinen kaupunki kyseessä. Tänne täytyy tulla uudelleen ja viipyä kauemmin tutustumassa kaupunkiin. Zadarista on vilkas lautta ja pika-alus liikenne lähistön saarille ja kauemmaksikin.

When we got back to the ship, it was time for lunch at the Buffet, where we never managed to order drinks for the table during the cruise. A shameful performance by the restaurant staff. The food at the buffet was basically good food. After the ship departed, it was time for shopping. Armonia has significantly more shops compared to its sister ship. I managed to spend a lot of money there. Dinner was again in the main restaurant and the service was good and fast, just like on the first evening. After dinner, it was time to explore the ship’s entertainment. The ship has three Lounges with live music and a pub at the bow of the ship below the theater. There was no live music in the pub, although there was a stage and a guitar there. In addition, the ship has a Disco with good views. During the evening, we also got to explore the ship’s drink selection. At the end of the evening, we traditionally had a couple of slices of pizza for an evening snack.
Saavuttuamme takaisin laivalle oli lounaan aika Buffetissa, jossa ei risteilynaikana onnistuttu kertaakaan tilaamaan juomia pöytään. Häpeällinen suoritus ravintolan henkilökunnalta. Ruoka oli buffetissa perus hyvää ruokaa. Laivan lähdön jälkeen oli shoppailun aika. Armonialla on sisaralukseen verrattuna huomattavasti enemmän kauppoja. Illan päätteeksi tuli perinteiseen tapaan iltapalaksi haettua parit pizza siivut.

On the third day of the trip, we went to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Another new destination. Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century, so it is also a really old city. The old city is surrounded by walls. It is a really wonderful city and I should visit Dubrovnik again and spend more time there. There is also a ferry and a fast boat service from Dubrovnik to the Croatian coast. Although significantly less than from Zadar.
Matkan kolmantena päivänä oli vuorossa Dubrovnik, Kroatiassa. Toinen uusi käyntikohde. Dubrovnik on perustettu 600-luvulla , joten myöskin todella vanha kaupunki. Vanha kaupunki on muurien ympäröimä.

Back on the ship, it was time to take advantage of the free spa visit. We had already known in advance that the ship had a fairly small and modest spa. But the experience was a real disappointment. We got into the spa without a prior appointment and we were the only customers there. The reason why it wasn’t crowded soon became clear. The spa has a three “saunas” and two showers and a relaxation area. Two of the saunas were really cold, maybe around 30-35 degrees, and one was even a little warm, maybe 40-50 degrees. Only one of the showers was supposed to be cold, but the other one was too and some of the nozzles didn’t work. Luckily, the visit was free. But on the positive side, the sun was shining during the day and we were able to use the swimming pools and jacuzzis on the pool deck. When the ship left, it was getting dark and Dubrovnik’s Dr. Franjo Tuđman Bridge was magnificent in the evening lights.

After Dubrovnik, it was time for a sea day with the highlight being a passage through the Strait of Messina. The scenery in the Strait of Messina was more spectacular than I could have expected. There is also still a lot of ferry traffic there for the time being. The day’s program included two different Voyager Club events and a buffet lunch on the sun deck. The sea day had the warmest weather of all, so we had to spend a large part of the day on deck. We also got to get to know the ship’s services better.

After the last night, it was time to arrive in Civitavecchia. There were several ferries and cruise ships in the port. Getting off the ship didn’t go quite as smoothly, this time either. This time, we and the other passengers who were getting off in Civitavecchia had gathered in the Lounge to wait to get off the ship. Once again, no one from the staff showed up to announce that we were leaving the ship, so everyone left on their own. From the port, we continued by shuttle bus to the train station, from where, despite the strike, we were able to get to Rome by train almost on time. An interesting detail is that the two-kilometer bus ride from the port to the train station cost twice as much as the 1h 15 min train ride.
Viimeisen yön jälkeen oli vuorossa Civitavecchiaan saapuminen. Satamassa oli useita lauttoja ja risteilyaluksia. Laivasta poistuminen ei sujunut aivan mallikelpoisesti, tälläkään kertaa. Tällä kertaa me ja muut Civitavecchiassa pois jäävät matkustajat olimme kokoontuneet Loungeen odottamaan laivasta poistumista. Jälleen kerran ketään henkilökunnasta ei ilmaantunut paikalle ilmoittamaan laivasta poistumisesta joten kaikki poistuivat omatoimisesti. Satamasta jatkoimme shuttlebussilla juna-asemalle , josta lakosta huolilmatta kuitenkin lähes ajallaan junalla pääsi Roomaan. Kiinnostava yksityiskohta on että parin kilometrin matka bussilla satamasta juna-asemalle maksoi tuplasti verrattuna 1h 15 min juna matkaan.

When we arrived in Rome, it was time for a snack. At the same time, we had to buy tickets for the airport bus and after being in the city center for a while, we headed to the airport. On the way, we saw some of the sights of Rome. At the airport, we had time to shop a little more before our flight with KLM to Amsterdam. This time, our plane was a Boeing 737-800 PH-BXL. As I write this, the first KLM 737-800 from the fleet has arrived for scrapping and it is registered as the previous PH-BXK. The flight was sold out again, like all flights on this trip, and the flight was a bit late. Which did not bode well for the connecting flight. However, the flight went smoothly and after arriving in Amsterdam, we headed to the gate for the Helsinki flight, where we arrived just in time as the last few passengers were queuing to board the plane. The plane was an A321neo, familiar from the first flight, and the next couple of hours went very smoothly. As always with KLM, snacks and drinks were included in the price of the trip. KLM will continue to offer snacks whenever possible. We arrived in Helsinki a couple of minutes after midnight.
Helsinkiin saavuimme pari minuttia yli puolen yön.
