A year ago, on the MSC Virtuosa cruise, we booked a Mediterranean cruise on MSC World Europa. We booked the flights with AirBaltic via Riga to Barcelona. In Barcelona, we stayed at Grums Spa Hotel before the cruise.
Vuosi sitten MSC Virtuosan risteilyllä varasimme Välimeren risteilyn MSC World Europalle. Lennot varasimme AirBalticilla Riian kautta Barcelonaan. Barcelonassa yövyimme Grums Spa-hotellissa ennen risteilyä.
In Barcelona, we took the airport bus to the city and our hotel Grums Spa. The hotel is located a couple of kilometers away in the harbor. In the hotel we had a terrace suite from the roof floor. A well-equipped and spacious room. Breakfast and use of the spa department were included in the price. for dinner we went to a nearby restaurant and the evening meal was found at Lidl, which is in the same building as the hotel. Wine under a euro can be good!!! After breakfast, we went to the park in front of the WTC, from where there was a bus ride to the port.
Barcelonassa siirryimme lentokenttä bussilla kaupunkiin ja hotelliimme Grums Spahan. Hotelli sijaitsee parin kilometrin päässä satamassa. Hotellissa meillä oli varattuna Terassisviitti kattokerroksesta. Hyvin varusteltu ja tilava huone. Aamiainen ja spa-osaston käyttö kuului hintaan. päivällisellä kävimme lähistön ravintolassa ja iltapala löytyi hotellin kanssa samassa talossa olevasta Lidl:istä. Alle euron viini voi olla hyvää!!! Aamiaisen jälkeen siirryimme WTC:n edustalla olevaan puistoon, josta oli bussikyyti satamaan.
The ship is MSC World Europa, completed in December 2022, one of the world’s largest cruise ships. The ship uses LNG as fuel. Main dimensions: Length 333 m, width 47 m, height 68 m and 22 floors. There are 6,762 passengers and 2,138 crew.
The big surprise was the check-in to the ship. Normally, at least an hour has passed while waiting in line and taking care of the formalities. But this time we were on the ship in about 15 minutes. Respecting tradition, first activate the payment card and then go to the buffet for lunch.
Laiva on Joulukuussa 2022 valmistunut MSC World Europa, yksi maailman suurimmista risteilyaluksista. Laiva käyttää LNG:tä polttoaineena. Tärkeimmät mitat : Pituus 333 m , leveys 47 m , korkeus 68 m ja 22 kerrosta. Matkustajia mahtuu 6,762 ja 2,138 miehistöä.
Iso yllätys oli check-in laivaan. Normaalisti mennyt vähintään tunti jonottaessa ja muodollisuuksia hoidellessa. Mutta tällä kertaa olimme noin 15 minuutissa laivassa. Perinteitä kunnioittaen ensin maksukortin aktivointi ja sen jälkeen buffettiin lounaalle.
There was a lot to photograph in Barcelona, mostly ferries. Our first dinner was Hola! – at Tacos & Cantina. Really good food and drink. Although we had to pay a little extra, since it is a special restaurant, it was worth it. In the evening, we continued getting to know the ship’s services. And the next morning it was Marseille in France. There was also a lot to photograph.
Barcelonassa oli paljon kuvattavaa, lähinnä autolauttoja. Ensimmäisen illalisen söimme Hola! – Tacos & Cantinassa . Todella hyvä ruoka ja juoma. Vaikka jouduimme maksamaan pienen lisän, kun kyseessä on erikoisravintola niin kyllä kannatti. Illalla jatkoimme tutustumista laivan palveluihin. Ja seuraavana aamuna oli vuorossa Marseille Ranskassa. Siellä myös oli paljon kuvattavaa.
In Marseille we spent the day on the ship. There was enough to photograph and get to know the ship. We booked a visit to Aurea Spa for noon, when there are the fewest customers. In addition, we continued to get to know the ship. The second night we had dinner in the main restaurant.
Marseillessa vietimme päivän laivalla. Kuvattavaa riitti ja tutustumista laivaan. Varasimme Aurea Spassa käynnin keskipäivälle, kun siellä vähiten asiakkaita. Lisäksi jatkoimme tutustumista laivaan. Toisena iltana söimme päivällisen pääravintolassa.
Bumper Cars and Roller Skates
Next was Genoa in Italy. There was expected to be a lot to photograph there, especially with regard to the old car ferries. This time in Genoa we visited the maritime museum. Last time we visited the Aquarium, which is also worth a visit. In the evening, there was one of many really good theater performances.
Seuraavana oli vuorossa Genova Italiassa. Siellä oli odotettavissa paljon kuvattavaa varsinkin vanhojen autolauttojen osalta. Genovassa kävimme tällä kertaa merenkulku museossa. Viimeksi vierailimme Akvaariossa joka kannattaa myös käydä katsomassa. Illalla oli vuorossa yksi monesta todella hyvästä teatteri esityksestä.
After Genoa it was Civitavecchia and this time we made an exception and booked a tour from the ship to Rome and the Vatican, it cost 160 euros for two people, was it worth the price? Yes it was. There was also plenty to photograph in the port of Civitavecchia. Also pictures of one of the ship’s favorite places, the Raj Polo Tea House. Really great colonial style place for really good tea.
Genovan jälkeen oli vuorossa Civitavecchia ja tällä kertaa teimme poikkeuksen ja varasimme laivalta kiertoajelun Roomaan ja Vatikaaniin, se maksoi 160 euroa kahdelta hengeltä, oliko se hintansa arvoinen? Kyllä se oli. Civitavecchian satamassa riitti myös paljon kuvattavaa. Kuvia myöskin yhdestä laivan suosikkipaikasta Raj Polo Tea Housesta. Todella upea siirtomaa-ajan tyylinen paikka todella hyvää teetä.
The ship’s pub – Masters of the Seas has its own brewery, where three different beers are brewed. At the end of a demanding and precise test period, we came to the conclusion that the ship’s beers were good. The pub’s beer selection is really versatile. Two troubadours took turns in the pub, so live music is available for most of the evening.
Laivan pubissa – masters of the seas on oma panimo, jossa valmistetaan kolmea eri olutta. Vaativan ja tarkan testijakson päätteeksi tulimme siihen tulokseen, että laivan oluet olivat hyviä. Pubin olutvalikoima on todella monipuolinen. Pubissa kaksi trubaduuria vuorottelivat , joten suuren osan illasta on live-musiikkia tarjolla.
After Rome, we headed to Sicily and Palermo. There were also “surprisingly” a lot of car ferries to photograph. The scenery is wonderful when we arrive in the city and the city itself is a nice place to go for a walk. The harbor area had been rebuilt since the previous visit. In the evening, after filming the departure of the ship, it was time for dinner and the theater.
Rooman jälkeen suuntasimme Sisiliaan ja Palermoon. Siellä myöskin “yllättäin” oli paljon autolauttoja kuvattavaksi. Maisemat on upeat, kun saavumme kaupunkiin ja kaupunki itsessään on kiva kohde lähteä kävelylle. Satama-aluetta oli rakennettu uusiksi sitten edellisen vierailun. Illalla laivan lähdön kuvaamisen jälkeen oli vuorossa päivällinen ja teatteri.
The next destination was Malta and the capital Valletta. Last time we took a bus around the island, so this time we stayed in Valleta. The harbor and the city are really wonderful. The traditions of the British Empire can still be seen in the street scene. Next was the sea day.
Seuraava kohde oli Malta ja pääkaupunki Valletta. Edellisen kerran kävimme bussilla kierroksen saaren ympäri, joten tällä kertaa pysyimme Valletassa. Satama ja kaupunki on todella upea. Hyvin näkyy Britti imperiumin perinteet vielä katukuvassa. Seuraavana oli vuorossa meripäivä.
Sea day between Valletta and Barcelona. The best day for shopping, that’s when you usually have the best deals. The welcome back cocktail event was also on sea day.

The ship has two large Promenades, the World Gallery indoors and the World Promenade outdoors.

There is much more to experience on board than there is time to experience in a week. So I have to do another cruise on MSC World Europa sometime.
Laivalla on paljon enemmän koettavaa kuin on aikaa viikossa kokea. Joten täytyy tehdä joskus uusi risteily MSC World Europalla.
A week on the ship goes by very quickly. Another week could easily pass. MSC World Europa is a wonderful ship in every way. But somehow it seems in many places that the concept is not ready yet. And although the ship’s facilities are understatedly gorgeous, all luxury is gone, no Swarovski staircase, no brass, or other traditional luxurious materials have been used in the interior. But still, a really great ship. The staff was really good on the ship and surprisingly there was a lot of European staff, e.g. as waiters.
We arrived in Barcelona and soon we were on land and from there we took a taxi to the airport, which this time was surprisingly 20 euros cheaper than the last time. The first leg from Barcelona to Riga had the same plane as between Helsinki and Riga, and from Riga the journey continued to cold and frozen Finland. The return to everyday life had come.
Viikko laivalla kuluu todella nopeasti. Helposti menisi toinenkin viikko. MSC World Europa on kaikin puolin upea laiva. Mutta jotenkin näyttää monin paikoin ettei konsepti ole vielä valmis. Ja vaikka laivan tilat on hillityn upeat niin kaikki luxus on poissa, ei Swarovski portaita, ei messinkiä, tai muita perinteisiä ylellisiä materiaaleja sisustuksessa ole käytetty. Mutta silti, todella upea laiva. Henkilökunta oli todella hyvää laivalla ja yllättävän paljon oli eurooppalaistakin henkilökuntaa esim. tarjoilijoina.
Barcelonaan saavuttiin ja pian oltiin maissa ja sieltä taxilla lentokentälle, joka oli tällä kertaa yllättäen 20 euroa edullisempi kuin viimeksi. Ensimmäisellä osuudella Barcelonasta – Rigaan oli sama kone kuin Helsingin ja Rigan välillä ja Rigasta matka jatkui kylmään ja loskaiseen Suomeen. Paluu arkeen oli koittanut.
WHAT did this cost?
Cruise for two including Bella-experience interior cabin, hotel service money, Easy Plus – drink package and tips in restaurants and Spa pass to Aurea Spa and 100 euros usage money for the ship 1400 euros. Flights with AirBaltic 300 euros and a hotel night at the GrumsSpa hotel 120 euros including Spa and breakfast and a good 500 euros were wasted on everything for nothing. So the trip cost a good 1,000 euros per person.
Risteily kahdelta sisältäen Bella-experience sisähytin, hotellipalvelurahan, Easy Plus – juomapaketin ja juomarahat ravintoloissa ja Spa passin Aurea Spahan ja 100 euroa käyttörahaa laivalle 1400 euroa. Lennot AirBalticilla 300 euroa ja hotelliyö GrumsSpa hotellissa 120 euroa sisältäen Span ja aamiaisen ja reilu 500 euroa tuli tuhlattua kaikkeen turhaan. Eli reilu 1000 euroa per henkilö tuli matkalle hintaa.
