After last year’s MSC Orchestra cruises I thought to try a larger cruise ships that I’ve never traveled, and now the beginning of winter occurred suitably MSC Grandosa delivered by Chantier de lÁtlantiquen shipyard. So it became our choice even when the trip was a very good price.
Viime vuotisen MSC Orchestran risteilyjen jälkeen ajattelin kokeilla suurempaa risteilyalusta jolla olen koskaan matkustanut ja nyt alkutalveen sattui sopivasti MSC Grandiosan valmistuminen Chantier de lÁtlantiquen telakalta. Joten siitä tuli valintamme vielä, kun matkankin sai hyvään hintaan.
The port of departure was Genova, which is a troublesome port of departure from Finland due to the lack of direct connections. So while I was watching flights for a while I took a flight from Helsinki to Nice and spend there one night at the hotel and another night in Genoa before the cruise.
Lähtösatamaksi valikoitui Genova , joka on suomesta katsottuna hankala lähtösatama , suorien yhteyksien puuttumisen vuoksi. Joten kun hetken katselin lentoja niin menomatkan lennon otin Helsingistä Nizzaan ja siellä yksi yö hotellissa ja toinen yö Genovassa ennen risteilyä.
Nice is a nice seaside town, a pity it was just less than a day to explore the city. The Premiere Class Nice Hotel, located next to the airport runway, was selected. The hotel is quite old, probably made in the 70’s and 80’s, and the rooms became reminiscent of an old car ferry cabin with an orange plastic module toilet facilities. But all in all, the facilities were clean, albeit old and with signs of wear everywhere. Service and breakfast were also ok to the level. Much more could not be hoped for at this time of the year with a price of less than 50€ for a 2 beds room and breakfast. The next morning, another quick visit to the city and then towards the airport bus station and the next adventure.
Nizza on mukava merenranta kaupunki , harmi että oli ainoastaan vajaa vuorokausi aikaa tutustua kaupunkiin. Hotelliksi tuli valittua Premiere Class Nice hotelli, joka sijaitsee lentokentän kiitoradan vieressä. Hotelli on melko vanha , varmaan 70-80 luvulla tehty , ja huoneista tuli vanhan autolautan hytti mieleen oransseine muovimoduli wc tiloineen. Mutta kaikkinensa, tilat oli siistit vaikkakin vanhat ja kulumisen merkkejä joka puolella. Palvelu ja aamiainen oli myös ok tasoa. Paljoa enempää ei voikaan toivoa kun tähän aikaan vuotta hinnaksi jäi alle 50 euroa huone aamiaisella. Seuravana aamuna vielä pikainen vierailu kaupungille ja sitten kohti lentokentän bussiasemaa ja seuraavaa seikkailua.
The next day we had booked a 4.5 hour Flixbus from Nice to Genoa. The route was really stunning. Offering seafront, mountains, villages, a glimpse of Monte Carlo, trafic jam, heavy rain and stunning views from the front seats of a 2 story bus that was booked for less than € 3. Heavy rains followed by floods and landslides where at least 2 people died during the that day. In the Liguiria, it was raining 300 mm of water in 3 hours.
Matkamme toiselle päivälle olimme varanneen Flixbussin 4,5 tuntia kestävän matkan Nizzasta Genovaan. Reitti oli todella upea. Tarjolla meren rantaa , vuoristoa, kyliä, vilaus Monte Carlosta , ruuhkia, rankkasadetta ja upeat näköalat 2 kerroksisen bussin etupenkeistä jotka sai alle 3 euron hintaan varattua. Alueella alkoi matkan aikana rankkasateet ja niitä seuranneet tulvat ja maanvyöryt joissa ainakin 2 ihmistä kuoli. Liguirian alueella satoi 300 mm vettä 3 tunnissa.
After arriving in Genoa, we stayed at the New Alexandra Hotel, right next to the harbor and bus station. The room was spacious and well equipped. The entrance floor had a bar and the ground floor had a great breakfast room, the interior of which looks like an old ocean liner borrowed.
Saavuttuamme Genovaan majoituimme New Alexandra Hotelliin aivan sataman ja bussiaseman vieressä. Huone oli tilava hyvin varusteltu . Sisääntulo kerroksessa oli baari ja alimmassa kerroksessa upea aamiais huone , jonka sisustus näyttää joltain vanhalta valtamerialukselta lainatulta.
On the third day after breakfast, we set out for a walk in the heavy rainfall towards Acquario di Genoa, Europe’s largest aquarium. There was enough to see for all the money. However, due to the “red alert” weather, dolphin shows were canceled. 300 mm of water rained in three hours near Genoa. After a quick 2-3 hours, we headed for a one kilometer to the harbor and check-in to MSC Grandiosa. This time it was relatively fast. Last time check in at Genova was a total comedy.
Kolmantena päivänä aamiaisen jälkeen lähdimme kävelylle rankkasateeseen suuntana Acquario di Genova, Euroopan suurin akvaario . Siellä riittikin nähtävää koko rahan edestä. Tosin “red alert” sään takia delfiinien esitykset oli peruttu. 300 mm vettä satoi kolmessa tunnissa Genovan lähistöllä. Nopeasti kuluneiden 2-3 tunnin jälkeen suuntasimme kilometrin päähän satamaan ja MSC Grandiosan lähtöselvitykseen. Joka tällä kertaa suhteellisen nopeasti onnistui. Edellisen kerran komedia Genovassa on oma lukunsa.
Our cabin was the 9th deck front cabin 9002, until the summer Fantastica level cabin, but in the summer will be promoted to Aurea level. The cabin was spacious about 25 m2 and had an extra small sleeping alcove with bunk beds and a double sofa bed. The bathroom was equipped with a bathtub and otherwise the equipment was good. Information technology and environmental thinking are taken into account in the cabin, as is the whole ship. The interactive butler Zoe was in use, though he did not learn understand speaking a Savo in 5 days. There were at least six USB plugs around the cabin, for example. night table light, a great invention. The door lock is remotely readable model, much easier to use than normal. Hyttimme oli 9. kannen keulahytti 9002 , vielä kesään saakka Fantastica tason hytti , mutta kesällä saa ylennyksen Aurea tasolle. Hytti oli tilava n. 25 m2 ja siinä oli parivuoteen ja vuodesohvan lisäksi vielä eerillinen pieni makuu alkovi kerrosvuoteella. Kylppäri oli varustettu ammeella ja muutenkin varustus oli kaikin puolin hyvä. Tietotekniikka ja ympäristöajattelu on otettu huomioon hytissä kuten koko laivalla. Interaktiivinen puheella toimiva hovimestari Zoe oli käytössä, tosin savoa se ei 5 päivässä oppinut. USB- pistokkeita oli ainakin kuusi ympäri hyttiä mm . yöpöydän valoissa, loistava keksintö. Oven lukko on etäluettavaaa mallia, huomattavasti helpompi käyttää. Kaikki valaistus on ledeillä, jätteiden lajitteluroskikset hyteissä, interaktiivinen TV Zoen lisäksi ja MSC for me sovellus tekee matkasta paljon helpomman, palveluiden varaaminen ja niistä muistutukset tulee näytölle tai puhelimeen ja puhelimen avulla voi paikantaa itsensä ja saa tarvittaessa avustuksen haluamaasi paikkaan. Lisäksi laivalla on rannekkeita myynnissä joilla voi esim lapset tai kaverit paikantaa suoraan omalla puhelimella. Lisäksi laivan interaktiiviset kansikartat ja opastetaulut saa etälukuna hyttikorttia käyttämällä myös kertomaan omat tiedot ja varaukset jne… Laivan noin 20 hissiä varataan hissiaulan infotaululta valitsemalla haluttu kerros ja järjestelmä kertoo mikä hissi on sinne menossa. Tällä on saatu hissien käyttöä tehostettu ja turhaa kaikkien hissien ajoa vähennetty.
Once the cabin was set up, it was time to get to explore the ship. To the Buffet first for lunch and then getting to explore the ship. After that it was a rescue exercise in theater and leaving Genova. Unlike many other cruise ships, the MSC Grandiosa does not have life jackets in the cabin. There was lot of targets to photograph in the Genova harbor. However, heavy rain did not make shooting easier.
Kun oli asetuttu hyttiin niin oli aika lähteä tutustumaan laivaan. Buffaan ensin lounaalle ja sitten tutustumaan laivaan, Sen jälkeen oli vuorossa pelastusharjoitus ja lähtö Genovasta. Poiketen monista muista risteilyaluksista MSC Grandiosalla ei pelastusliivit sijaitse hytissä. Siellä riittikin satamassa kuvattavaa. Rankkasade ei tosin helpottanut kuvaamista.
The evening went smoothly as we got to explore the ship. After the stormy night 9-11 on the Beaufort scale in the morning it was time for Civitavecchia, not this time either the weather was better than last year, so the day was spent getting to know better aboard. There were Bithia and Amadea in the harbor, followed by Moby Dada and Majestic.
Ilta meni sujuvasti laivaan tutustuessa. Myrskyisen yön 9-11 boforia jälkeen aamulla oli vuorossa Civitaveccia , eikä tälläkään kertaa sää ollut viime vuotta parempi , joten päivä kului laivaan paremmin tutustuessa. Satamassa oli Bithia ja Amadea , myöhemmin saapui Moby Dada ja Majestic.
The 1298-seat Buffet Restaurant on deck 15 of the ship was also partly redesigned, starting with an entrance with many hand-washing facilities, tables with waiter invitations and lines much longer than previous ships. In addition, Mozzarella cheese is made every day at the Buffet.
Laivan 15 kannen 1298 paikkainen Buffet ravintola oli myös osaltaan uusiksi ajateltu, alkaen sisääntulosta jossa oli monia käsienpesupisteitä, pöydissä oli tarjoitilijoiden kutsupainikkeet ja linjastot oli huomattavasti aiempia laivoja pidemmät. Lisäksi Buffetissa valmistetaan Mozzarella juustoa joka päivä.
There are several pool areas on board, Indoor Pool Safari Pool, Outdoor Atmosphere Pool, Horizon Pool and Wildforest Aquapark.

The next day it was Sicily and Palermo, and at sea day I heard from the captain of the ship that MSC Grandiosa was the largest ship to call at the ports of Palermo and Valletta. The port had several GNV, Tirrenia and Toremar ferries on berth and a couple of fast ferry´s. In addition, the yard had Star Breeze for lengthening. Today’s weather has been significantly warmer, even if precipitation has not yet been avoided. Palermo is a great-looking city based on a quick walk, so you have to visit again and spend more time.
Seuraavana päivänä oli vuorossa Sisilia ja Palermo, meripäivänä kuulin kapteenin laivan esittelyssä että MSC Grandiosa on suurin Palermon ja Vallettan satamassa käynyt alus. Satamassa oli useita GNV:n, Tirenian ja Toremarin lauttoja paikalla ja pari pika-alusta. Lisäksi telakalla oli Star Breeze pidennettävänä. Päivän sää oli jo huomattavasti lämpimämpi vaikka sateilta ei vielä vältyttykään. Palermo on upean näköinen kaupunki pikaisen kävelykierroksen perusteella, täällä täytyy käydä uudestaan ja käyttää enemmän aikaa.

From Palermo, the journey continued at 6pm local time and we had the Circue du Soleil – Cosmos show we had booked a couple of days earlier. It cost only € 15 including a drink or € 35 for dinner. There was plenty to see for all the money and more. In addition to the talented group and thanks to Carousel Lounge’s superb AV system.
Palermosta matka jatkui kello 18 paikallista aikaa ja meillä oli vuorossa odotettu pari päivää aiemmin varattu Circue du Soleil – Cosmos show. Sen hinta oli ainoastaan 15 € sisältäen drinkin tai 35€ päivällisellä. Nähtävää riitti koko rahan edestä ja enemmänkin. Taitavan ryhmän lisäksi kiitos Carousel Loungen loistavalle AV-järjestelmälle.
After Palermo, we headed overnight to neighboring island Malta and its magnificent capital, Valletta. It was already so warm that breakfast could be enjoyed outside. Navigation of the MSC Grandiosa to Valletta harbor was a spectacular sight, no wonder this is the largest ship that has ever been there, especially at the mouth of the harbor. It was time to explore the city and take a 2 hour sightseeing tour on the open-top bus around the island of Malta.
Palermon jälkeen suuntasimme yön yli naapurisaarelle Maltalle ja sen upeaan pääkaupunki Vallettaan. Nyt oli jo aamu niin lämmin että aamiaisen voi nauttia ulkona. MSC Grandiosan navigointi Vallettan satamaan oli huikea näky, Ei ihme että kyseessä on suurin siellä käynyt alus, tilaa varsinkaan sataman suulla ei ollut liikaa. Oli aika lähteä tutustumaan kaupunkiin ja 2 tunnin kiertoajelulle open-top bussilla ympäri Maltan saarta.

It was time to get back to the ship and lunch. Then to the pool and wait for the ship to depart for Barcelona.
Oli aika palata laivalle ja lounaalle. Sen jälkeen altaalle ja odottamaan laivan lähtöä kohti Barcelonaa.
Today was the first evening when it was time for dinner at the main restaurant. Of the three main restaurants, we had a table at La Loggia restaurant. The food was good basic, the restaurant cozy and the service surprisingly fast considering that after Palermo the ship was already quite crowded. Later in the evening, it was time to shopping.
Tänään oli ensimmäinen ilta kun oli aikaa käydä pääravintolassa illallisella. Kolmesta pääravintolasta meille oli varattu pöytä La Loggia ravintolasta.Ruoka oli hyvää perustasoa , ravintola viihtyiisä ja tarjoilu yllättävän nopeaa siihen nähden että Palermon jälkeen laiva oli jo melko täysi matkustajia. Myöhemmin illalla oli vuorossa shoppailua.
In the evening, as we did the other nights, we headed to the magnificent Sky Lounge with 18 decks, with a single window overlooking 180 degrees. The lounge is for adults only and served new types of smoky and molecular drinks, the latter not yet available. Apparently only 2-3 days later all the supplies were ready for them. A great place to spend evening.
Illalla suuntasimem kuten muinakin iltoina 18 kannen upeaan Sky Loungeen , josta yhtenäinen yli 180 asteen näkymän tarvoava ikkuna. Lounge on vain aikuisille ja siellä tarjoiltiin uudenlaisia savuavia ja molekyyli drinkkejä, joista jälkimmäisiä ei vielä ollut tarjolla. Kuulemma vasta 2-3 päivää myöhemmin oli kaikki tarvikkeet valmiina niihin. Upea illan istumispaikka.
The next one was a day at sea and more time to get to explore the ship which was still very much inexperienced and after five days there was still something to be done the next cruise. Next, take a look at the play & sports activities for kids and adults, for both there is lot of to choise.
Seuraavan olikin vuorossa meripäivä ja lisää aikaa tutustua laivaan josta vielä hyvin paljon oli kokematta ja viiden päivän jälkeenkin jäi vielä koettavaa seuraavalle kerralle . Seuraavaksi tutustumaan lasten ja aikuisten leikki & urheilu aktiviteetteihin joita molempia löytyi riittävästi.
The heart of the ship is Galleria Grandiosa, which has many restaurants, bars, shops and other services on two floors. The pedestrian street has activities during the day and in the evening with live music. The space is made especially impressive by its 93-meter LED ceiling.
Laivan sydän on Galleria Grandiosa jonka varrella kahdessa kerroksessa sijaitsee monet ravintolat, baarit, kaupat ja muut palvelut. Kävelykadulla on ohjelmaa tarjolla päivällä ja illalla jolloin siellä on livemusiikkia tarjolla. Tilan tekee erityisen upeaksi 93 metrinen led-katto.
The best delicacies of the ship can be found in the Gallery alongside Jean-Philippe Chocolate & Coffee and Jean-Philippe Crêpes & Gelato. Really good chocolate and all the things can be done using choco and Gelato side I must say that is one of the best sorbets found there what I have ever eaten. Chocolate MSC Grandiosa slowly got in shape during the trip 🙂
Laivan parhaat herkuttelu paikat löytyy Gallerian varrelta Jean-Philippe Chocolate & Coffee ja Jean-Philippe Crêpes & Gelato. Todella hyvää suklaata ja mitä kaikkea siitä voikaan tehdä ja Gelaton puolelta täytyy sanoa että yksi parhaimmista sorbeteista löytyi sieltä mitä olen koskaan syönyt. Suklainen MSC Grandiosa sai hiljalleen muotoa matkan aikana 🙂
For entertainment, MSC Grandiosa has a theater, Carousel Lounge, two discos, an English pub and numerous bars.
Ajanvietteeksi MSC Grandiosalta löytyy teatteri Carousel Lounge, kaksi discoa , englantilainen pubi ja lukuisia baareja.
And much was inexperienced from the ship. Yacht Club class will have to be tested in the future, Spa department missed out, theatrical performances missed etc … so there is still plenty to see on the next cruise.
Ja paljon jäi vielä laivalta näkemättä ja kokematta.. Yacht Club luokka täytyy tulevaisuudessa testata, Spa osasto jäi tutustumatta , teatteri esitykset jäi väliin jne… joten toisellekin matkalle riittää vielä näkemistä.
Everything was working well on board, although there were still some unfinished items on display and staff are still learning about their new ship. And then something negative, the basic beverage package level has dropped tremendously, just less than 10 years ago most beverages were included, only some premium products were not included, until a year ago there was about 50/50 on the package supply onboard but now only basic non alcoholic drinks, beer, ship wines and about 10 different drinks were part of the basic package, for example ice cream had left the package. So if you want a bit more variety then you need to take a Premium Drink Package.
Kaikkinensa kaikki toimi laivalla hyvin vaikka paikoin oli nähtävissä vielä hieman keskeneräisiä kohteita ja henkilökunta vielä opettelee uutta laivaansa. Ja sitten jotain negatiivistäkin, perus juomapaketin taso on tippunut valtavasti, vielä vajaa 10 vuotta sitten suurin osa juomista kuului siihen, ainoastaan jotkin premium tuotteet ei kuulunut, vielä vuosi sitten oli noin 50/50 tilanne pakettiin kuuluvien tarjonta laivalla, mutta nyt perus alkoholittomien lisäksi vain olut, laivan viinit ja noin 10 erilaista drinkkiä kuului peruspaketin valikoimaan, esimerkiksi jäätelöt oli poistunut paketista. Joten jos haluaa vähän laajemman valikoiman niin täytyy ottaa Premium juomapaketti.
During the day, Captain Marco Massa introduced his ship to the Carousel Lounge.
Meripäivän aikana kapteeni Marco Massa esitteli laivaansa Carousel Loungessa.
But then the journey began to be over and Barcelona was ahead and return to home. In Barcelona there were MSC Poesia, Amera and Ciudad de Palma. Check out always works fast and now with self check out we left the ship about half an hour after arriving at the port and took a taxi to the airport.
Mutta sitten alkoi matka lähestymään loppuaan ja edessä oli Barcelona ja paluu kotiin. Barcelonassa oli MSC Poesia , Amera ja Ciudad de Palma paikalla. Check out toimii aina nopeasti ja nyt self check out:illa poistuimme laivasta noin puoli tuntia satamaan saapumisen jälkeen ja suuntasimme taksilla lentokentälle.
It was definitely a worthwhile trip and MSC Grandiosa is over sized to be a “ship” , but definitely a worth visited again.
Oli ehdottomasti käymisen arvoinen matka ja MSC Grandiosa olkoonkin, että käsite laiva hämärtyy tuossa kokoluokassa niin ehdottomasti uusinta vierailun arvoinen kohde.
